Smeargle used Spotlight 1 : Comfeytable On The Field VGC17

Hi guys today I am back with something different and surely I am quite proud to be doing something apart from team reports after a whole year of doing it. Welcome to the first installment of my new blog series that I am calling smeargle used spotlight, and no it has nothing to do with the title; the title is made the way to mean highlighting pokemons that are not getting attention or say putting out some anti-meta potential in these pokemons, as you may know I have tried building around quite some different mons apart from the metagame, but due to some of the teambuilds failing badly, I couldn’t showcase them properly. Therefore in this season I will try to cover the pokemons that not much people or no one uses and will bring out their niche aspect for competitive use, without further ado lets get starter:

Comfey:

Our todays topic seems to be a comfey, comfey is a new pokemon that is introduced in the alola region dex in pokemon 20’s project pokemon sun and pokemon moon games, this pokemons has a pure fairy typing and being the funny look-alike hybrid that it is of klefki and floette, I have found quite some aspects in this pokemon that are worthy of noting, only recently I have tested out this pokemon in VGC and I felt like it had some factor to suite in, that is why it is my first pick for the series and if you may ask, what are these few noticeable points regarding comfey? Following they are listed and explained:

Offensive priority:
Not something great to start with but then again not something that bad, offensive priority is quite rare in this format so is speed control in any forms other than trick room, draining kiss for comfey is a priority offensive move, this move won’t do much, but often on this little bit of damage can be essential and key to the strategy of a disruptive team.

Base stats:
Being a pokemon that does not evolve you will most likely expect unimpressive stats, but for comfey the case is a bit better as compared to others, not only if having a good total stat the stat distribution could matter a lot, from the first glance we get the following stats:

51 Hp / 52 Atk / 90 Def / 90 Spa / 110 Spd / 100 Spe

We can notice a very low amount of hp, and a very low attack stat, attack stat here is not required at all for we can see a good special attack stat in the base 90, even better is this pokemons’ special defense stat, it is the highest stat this pokemon has, following up the amazing (in this format) speed stat that makes this pokemon faster than most common and normal pokemons in this format. These stats are not to be only considered as a joke at all and can be very much useful.

Triage:
Oh and now comes the main material meta aspect that comfey has, its very signature ability known as triage, this ability gives priority to healing moves. These moves include in the movepool of comfey as synthesis, leech seed, floral healing and draining kiss. These moves hold great importance in what will later, in my opinion form great usage for this pokemon. Priority is surely a dangerous thing in a format with terribly and then slow pokemons ran inside trick room; especially priority healing can be very much useful for a bulky pokemon. If not for the pokemon then the move floral healing which is basically like a heal pulse but fairy type also getsw priority which can be of great help for partners.

Trick room:
Comfey is one of the new pokemons the new few pokemons introduced in the alola region that can use the move trick room, this can add a great layer to the competitive usage of comfey ad a whole new side to its supportive aspect as well, trick room currently being the most common form of speed control in this format and have importance held for comfey in it.

Diversity in movepool:
Although something extremely strange to talk about, comfey can be very much diverse this property of this pokemon will be reflected in the section where I showcase the sets I build for comfey’s usage.

Sets:

Comfey @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Triage
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 44 Def / 4 SpA / 204 SpD / 4 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draining Kiss
- Synthesis
- Protect
- Toxic

This is one of my personal spreads that I build, well I personally did build all these sets here, but the thing with this one is that I am currently trying to give this set a proper and fun bulky team structure around it, this set can be called as sort of a self-staller for comfey. The idea that gave me the inspiration to build this set up are two, one being celesteela being super annoying and the other being the new style of timer where there is no actual timer so that the battles can fall on the remaining amount of pokemons left of either side of the field which gives ignition to the aspect and chapter of stall in vgc. Although this set is inferior to celesteela and yes I knew that all along, for a team you build it can fit in the places where you can’t afford to keep a celesteela. What this spread does is take the advantage of big numbers of contact physical attackers in this format, like alolan marowak, physical tapu koko, fake out users and tapu bulu as well with its rocky helmet item, whereas it an recover its own hp of with the help of synthesis; moreover it can have the ability to poison its opponents badly which can allow it to stall out opponents better with the addition of the draining kiss.

 Comfey @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Triage
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Trick Room
- Floral Healing
- Draining Kiss
- Synthesis

This is my trick room moveset for comfey, this spread is build to be perfect partners with torcoal, the strategy and thought behind this comfey spread as a trick room setter is that comfey can use trick room to make slower mons go fast, then the main focus becomes the setters side which is usually a sweeper, however with floral healing you can always cover up the taken damage making your trick room stance stronger, also if your opponents figure out your strategy that comfey can use to heal its partner, then comfey becomes the target comfey, therefore I gave it the move called synthesis which now recovers up comfey itself, which keeps up you trick room stance for even more longer. This situation is great with a torcoal as a partner, in sun the healing power of synthesis is boosted as well as the eruption abuser torcoal needs maximum hp to do max damage, floral healing helps it out giving out more powerful eruptions.

Comfey @ Leftovers
Ability: Triage
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draining Kiss
- Calm Mind
- Synthesis
- Protect

This is the last moveset I have for comfey however even I don’t think to the fullest of it actually being viable, however some calcs are looking good. Simple principle of set-up follows her with the aid of using draining kiss, leftovers and synthesis comfey can become a special wall over time in battle, however keeping a weaker physically defensive stance is going to be tough for it. Good partners for this comfey set can be salazzle, salazzle can use fake out to help comfey set-up further it can use will-o-wisp to cut the opponents’ attack stat which greatly helps comfey, salazzle having the ability to use strong fire moves, to take out steel type threats to this pokemon like celesteela and kartana further taking down tapu koko and tapu bulu through poison coverage which will help comfey set-up loads.
